Article Excerpt Asking whether we professionals should be involved in after-school programs is like asking whether a health-care professional should be involved in a clinic. Of course we and they should be involved.
I not only feel that we should be involved, we should be the leaders in developing and carrying out these kinds of after-school activities. In view of our image problems, we can use all the image-building we can get. Perhaps rather than dropping programs in school, school administrators will add them!
Providing organized, goal-oriented activities led by professionals in the field will result in more appropriate outcomes. Children participating in these activities will have the opportunity to improve in the areas defined by our field's goals. That in itself will be a positive outcome for them, our communities, our schools, and our profession.

Why not? If the HPERD professional has an interest in after-school programs, who else would be better? One of the first priorities of a strong professional in HPERD should be a genuine care and concern for children.
