PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The local state-owned SOHAR REFINERY CO. recently awarded a plant construction contract to an international joint venture. The partners in the planned undertaking, and their respective shareholdings, include US-based ABB LUMMUS GLOBAL (20%), LG INTERNATIONAL CO. of South Korea (20%) and SOHAR

REFINERY HOLDING of Oman (60%).

According to the terms of the turnkey award the partnership will be responsible for building a polypropylene (PP) plant with an installed production capacity of 340,000 metric tons per year. The new complex, to be sited in the Sohar region, is expected to cost $180,000,000 to build.

As things currently stand, construction work is not expected to begin before 2003 and, project completion is scheduled for some time during the year 2006.
