As the global mining industry continues to battle in the face of low metals prices and defining demand, one sector in particular is currently bucking the negative reporting trend. A small but sustained recovery in the gold price, combined in some cases with favourable exchange rates and reduced costs, has led to several gold producers reporting increased profits for the December 2001 quarter. In particular, South-African-based producers are enjoying the benefits of a depreciating rand which, in some instances, has returned sections of mines or even whole operations to profitability. The weakened rand is boosting companies of all sizes, as the results released this week by three South African gold producers show.
