Much of our knowledge regarding the risks that chemicals pose to children is extrapolated from laboratory animal studies. Unfortunately, this approach to risk assessment tends to centre on obvious birth defects and disease induced by one particular chemical, while in the real world children are exposed to a host of chemicals that may have multiple and subtle effects.

These possible effects deserve more attention. To do this means adopting a more broadly based framework for contamination research -- one that assesses the many ways in which children might be affected by chemicals in real world situations. Of course doing so is not easy: unlike experimental animals in the controlled conditions created in labs, children in the real world vary in their diet, genetic make-up and life-style, all of which are known to produce variations in development...
