With the temperature pushing 50 degrees in the midafternoon sunshine, it felt downright balmy for late January in southwest Wisconsin. The spring-like weather didn't faze anyone as our extended family arrived for a long-anticipated snow-sports getaway at Justin Trails Resort, an old dairy farm turned bed-and-breakfast near Sparta, 25 miles east of the Mississippi River.

We had the farm to explore, tucked prettily into a sheltered valley among rolling hills covered with birch, aspen and oak. There were animals to meet, including a pair of Siberian huskies - Heidi, age 3 years, and George, age 10 months - along with five cats, a pygmy goat and a white rabbit.

There were country lanes to follow as they curled past the farmsteads of the largest Amish settlement in Wisconsin. Despite unseasonably warm temperatures, there were winter sports for the kids on snow that clung to shaded, north-facing slopes at the farm and at nearby Whitetail Ridge ski resort that makes snow and offers tubing slopes served by a rope tow.
