SALEM - A diverse coalition led by labor and business groups called on the Legislature to extend $131 million in additional unemployment benefits to part-time workers, those who have already exhausted their benefits and other people laid off in Oregon's recession.

Led by the Oregon AFL-CIO and Associated Oregon Industries, the group is pushing for its package of new and extended benefits to be approved at the Feb. 8 special session, so laid-off workers can receive more money beginning in March.

Richard Butrick, president of AOI, said the proposal would not cost taxpayers or employers additional dollars, but would combine $55 million in available federal dollars with $76 million...
