Close to 99 percent of Oregon schools earned at least a "satisfactory" grade on the third annual state report cards released Thursday, a slight improvement over last year.

Local schools mirrored the strong overall performance, with several - including both the elementary school and the high school in rural Marcola - earning "exceptional" ratings.

"We're going to have a pep assembly in a little while, and I'm going to go in there and crow," said Don Jackson, the exuberant principal of Mohawk High School, which bested its "strong" rating from last year. He credited a committed staff who love kids, students who love to please their teachers and a "Norman Rockwell" community that loves its schools.

According to the Oregon Department of Education, only 50 schools in the state and five other schools in Lane County earned an "exceptional" rating: Eugene's Gilham, Eastside Alternative, Fox Hollow and Twin Oaks elementary schools and Junction City's Laurel Elementary.
