The mercury factor

I'm glad to see people waking up to the fact that all the wonderful compact fluorescent bulbs being touted and sold are probably the worst thing to happen to the environment in many years.

Most of these bulbs used in residences will end up in the landfill, eventually leaching mercury into the groundwater. All fluorescents contain mercury.

The state has banned products with mercury, including thermometers. How could this distribution of compact fluorescent bulbs happen? When I contacted the Eugene Water & Electric Board, I was informed that utility officials were aware of the problem and that eventually they are going to start informing the public about the proper way to dispose of the bulbs through recycling.

All of the information regarding how much energy is saved by each bulb is totally ludicrous, and I'm sure the fact that normal incandescents help warm your home was never figured in the equation. Have fun replacing them when they're banned.

Disgusting language

As a subscriber to The Register-Guard, I am used to a good bit of strong language while perusing the letters to the editor.

However, Tony Cracolice (letters, Jan. 15) has reached a new low with his "President Bumpkin" remarks.

Surely there should be an editorial cut-off point somewhere where meaningful criticism descends to such derisive expressions as "puddle of drool" and is referring to a man (who is, after all, our president) as a "rube" and "bumpkin." Pretty disgusting.
