"Osgood-Schlatter disease," the doctor repeated. He explained that the pain John had been having was caused by some pulling on the kneecap tendon, and is common in teens who do a lot of running, jumping, or kicking. John Rush, 15, from Sudbury, Massachusetts, fit the profile.
"It started when I was about 12. I was playing a lot of basketball. The doctor told me it would go away on its own, but it took nearly a year."
What did it feel like? John says, "It was like I pulled a muscle, but it was right below my kneecap. It was usually red and swollen right after I played sports. It hurt to walk and to put pressure on it."
