Leland Heart

CRESWELL - The funeral will be Jan. 16 for Leland Z. Heart of Creswell, who died Jan. 10 of heart failure. He was 97.

Heart was born Aug. 26, 1906, in Baker City to John and Mary Albrich Heart. He married Ruth Jones on July 23, 1926, and Velma Tevepaugh on July 3, 1974; both died previously. He married Lois Rowland on Oct. 23, 1991.

His first job was as an elevator operator in the historic Geyser Grand Hotel in Baker City, followed by bellhop positions in Medford and Portland. He worked as night desk clerk and bellhop at the Eugene Hotel, during which time became a successful farmer in the Creswell area, raising laying hens, fruits and vegetables that he sold to the Agri-Pac cannery in Eugene.

Heart enjoyed photography, the outdoors, fishing, hunting and motoring through the countryside. He helped build the Creswell Christian Center.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; two daughters, Kathleen Dunaway of Phoenix, Ariz., and Darlin Klusmeier of Reno, Nev.; a son, Eugene of Gridley, Calif.; three stepchildren: Judy Garman of Yakima, Wash., Len Klusmeier of Reno and Gene Klusmeier of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. A stepson, Ray Klusmeier, died previously.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday at England's Eugene Memorial Chapel. Friday's service will be at the Creswell Christian Center at 1:30 p.m., with burial at Creswell Pioneer Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Creswell Christian Center.
