TUPELO -- A 185-room, $9-million Sheraton Hotel for the downtown Fair Park District being proposed by Canton developer S.L. Sethi of Jackie's International would enhance the city's ability to attract tourism and conventions, says Tupelo Mayor Larry Otis.

The Tupelo Redevelopment Agency had issued a request for proposals (RFP) to build a new hotel downtown as part of a revitalization of the Fair Park district that includes the Tupelo Auto Museum, a new city hall and a new convention center. Two companies responded to the RFP.

"This particular group that is being chosen to work with we feel like has an outstanding proposal," Otis said. "We are excited about the possibility of their group building and operating the facility, and also working with us on a convention center the city proposes to build. We think it will fit extremely well particularly at the site that is immediately adjacent to the BancorpSouth Center, which is a 10,000-seat coliseum. This gives the hotel and convention center...
