It used to be that small construction projects involving fewer than five acres were exempt from having to obtain a storm water permit from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). But in early November, the MDEQ announced that builders of small projects must now go through the storm water permitting process.

The MDEQ said the change in the storm water permitting, requirements is due to the expansion of the current Phase I Storm Water Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
