Interesting years ahead for a different kind of bank in Meridian: Citizens National Bank eyes $1 billion asset mark by 2007.

MERIDIAN -- The motto of Meridian's Citizens National Bank (CNB) is, "It's different here." Perhaps all banks can say that, and most banks say words about the customer being supreme.

But a lot of factors sure seem to make CNB different.

To begin with, it was founded in 1888, and it's been open for business every working day since. It holds the distinction of being one of only six banks in Mississippi that reopened its doors the day following FDR's 1933 Bank Holiday that gave the nation's Great Depression-ravaged banks a chance to take a deep breath.

The banks that remained have seen many changes.

But the bare statistics show some really big changes at CNB since 1998. Its share of Lauderdale County bank deposits has grown from 25% to 30%. Total loans have jumped from $206 million to $326 million. And total assets have accelerated from $500 million to $675 million. Those are reasons enough for the stock's...
