This week's cold snap and snowy weather haven't increased the demand at local homeless shelters - most run near capacity at this time of year anyway - but they have brought to light another hardship that people without adequate shelter often face.

Many homeless campers, as well as people trying to make do in small camp trailers, recreational vehicles and even cars, rely on propane heaters for warmth as well as cooking during cold months.

Propane prices this winter have been high - as much as or more than a gallon of gas at local service stations - and that means uncomfortable nights for many families who can't afford to refill their five-gallon tanks.
