How about 'whine-free zone'?

So Douglas Beauchamp (letters, Dec. 27) is afraid that the new rules for Eugene's downtown may make some of the followers of his ArtWalk into law breakers. Beauchamp should relax. I doubt very much that the SWAT team is going to storm the galleries and knock over the cheese and wine trays.

If Beauchamp put half the energy into working with the new rules rather than complaining to all the media about them, I am quite certain that the ArtWalk would be in no peril whatsoever.

The greatest danger to many people in Eugene would be for the City Council to designate downtown as a "whine-free zone."

Deluded public hurts democracy

According to a recent poll, despite the absence of evidence, 53 percent of Americans believe Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 conspiracy. This same 53 percent appears to make up most of the majority that still supports Bush and the Iraq war. It is essential in a democracy that the public exercises oversight over elected leaders. But when most of the public allows itself to become so easily deluded regarding essential issues and becomes incapable of oversight, what can become of our government other than a mess?

In Oregon, the most popular current delusion is that the Measure 30 temporary tax increases are unnecessary. Last time we had an election like this, scoundrels leading the Republican Party fraudulently pretended...
