Already 2-0 in bowl games, and averaging 50 points in doing it, the Pac-10 gets into its serious challenges this week.

Like, is USC really No. 1? Can the Cougars stand up to Texas? And will the Silicon Valley Classic be saved by a matchup of Fresno State and UCLA?

Oh, right, who cares about a bowl game in San Jose?

Well, somebody did, because `eight or nine months ago, it looked like it was on its deathbed,' Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon said. Yet, here it lives on tonight, live on ESPN2 with a 7:30 p.m. PST kickoff.

It has never exactly been a welcome addition to the Pac-10 bowl lineup, and it might be excised after this season. Even if the presence of the Bruins, and the opportunity for a big victory by Fresno State, pushes attendance up at the Silicon Valley Classic, the Pac-10 is probably ready to find another bowl for its sixth-place team.
