EL PASO, Texas - In headlines in January and February, a big story when Oregon began football practice in August, junior cornerback Rodney Woods has become a footnote in December.
If not for past notoriety, he'd be the forgotten Duck.
The stats: Nine games, four starts, 24 tackles, one fumble recovery, three deflections, no interceptions.
During Oregon's three-game winning streak to save the season, Woods was on the bench, first because of injury, then because sophomore Justin Phinisee beat him out. Wednesday, when the Ducks play Minnesota in the Sun Bowl, Woods' only certain role will be on punt coverage, and perhaps kickoff coverage.
In that relative anonymity, Rodney Woods has finally become a typical Oregon junior college transfer.
With the exception of running backs, where Saladin McCullough, Reuben Droughns and Maurice Morris quickly became difference-makers, the JC transfers who come to Oregon are more apt to struggle as juniors than to make huge contributions, more apt to become solid role players as seniors rather than stars.
