A new law requiring a lifetime license revocation after a third conviction for drunk driving will bring a storm of court action and confusion, criminal defense lawyers predict.

Anti-drunk driving groups say the revocation law - one of seven new drunk driving laws go into effect on Jan. 1 - is needed, and legal challenges are to be expected with new laws.

"The question is how many chances do we give people once they've been put on notice that they have a drinking problem and they continue to drink and drive? I think three is plenty," said Steve Doell, director of the state lobbying group Crime Victims United.

Bill Rice, president of the Lane County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said the law targets dangerous repeat offenders.
