Relatively few consumers have returned beef linked to meat packing plants that processed a Washington state Holstein with mad cow disease, grocery store representatives said Monday.

But customers are asking more questions of their butchers about the origin of various beef products as federal officials seek meat from the infected cow across the West.

Northwest supermarket chains Safeway, Albertson's, Fred Meyer and WinCo each pulled ground beef from their shelves last week after the government announced that a dairy cow from Mabton, Wash., had bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE.

Store officials said Monday that they received relatively small amounts of beef from suppliers that handled the cow and they pulled the meat out of "an abundance of caution." Many have posted signs in their meat departments advising customers to...
