Mother Nature smacked area drivers coming and going on Monday, with a morning snowstorm that lubed the streets followed by freezing evening temperatures that turned slushy wet roadways into ice rinks.

It was nowhere near the drubbing travelers faced in a blizzard that shut down Interstate 5 for 19 hours south of Ashland, but fender benders and drivers spinning out into ditches kept emergency crews busy well into the night.

"Belt Line is getting really slick, especially over (Highway) 99 and the Northwest Expressway," one emergency worker reported via radio to dispatchers.

Oregon State Police dispatchers fielded 54 accident calls in Lane County, most of them on I-5, according to a state dispatcher.

Eugene police shut down Interstate 105 for an hour and a half so that crews could sand the roadway, Eugene police Lt. Rex Barrong said.

Most of the 30 accidents in Eugene between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. were fender benders and spinouts, Barrong said.

"It was all people going too fast for icy conditions," he said.
