EL PASO, Texas - It was as much of a shock as seeing the hole open up perfectly on a kickoff return.

`Congratulations,' a friend told Kenny Washington on that early December day.

`For what?' the Oregon junior responded.

`You're first team,' came the answer.

`Oh, shut up,' Washington scoffed. But he was curious, too, and asked `first team what?'

In the Pac-10, it turned out. Voted by the league's coaches as the best kickoff returner in the league for the 2003 season.

Yeah, really. Kenny Washington, who had never returned a kickoff in a college game until last season. Oregon's backup tailback. He really was an all-league selection. He just needed proof.

`I ran to a computer and looked it up on the Web site,' Washington said. `I saw it and then I went to the Pac-10 stats, and I was second in yards and second or third in average (yards per return).

`I don't really understand how I got first team....
