The importance of convenience-based products to the chicken industry is longstanding. The chicken nugget first premiered at the National Chicken Cooking Contest in 1971, when Dipper's Nuggets Chicken (whole-muscle meat fried in oil) took the grand prize. In 2001, three cups of chopped supermarket rotisserie chicken were the center of winning entry Tuscan Chicken Cakes with Tomato-Basil Relish. The 2003 winner used ground chicken to create Pacific Rim Chicken Burgers with Ginger Mayonnaise. The contest is sponsored jointly by the National Chicken Council (NCC) and the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.

"The key to growth in our industry is to give consumers more of what they want--tasty and appealing food products that save them time and effort and make their lives simpler and more enjoyable," says Elton Maddox, NCC chairman.
