Despite the busyness of business, many in the auto industry found time this year to lend a hand to those in need. Some fed hungry bodies, some fed hungry minds. Some provided comfort, encouragement or a day of fun. And it made a difference. Here are some of their stories.

* Lobbyist helps feed the homeless in Washington

Veteran auto lobbyist Tim MacCarthy and other members of his church commit a serial act of kindness in every month that has a fifth Saturday. On those mornings, MacCarthy and friends make breakfast for more than 200 people at Zacchaeus Community Kitchen in downtown Washington. MacCarthy, 58, formerly with the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association and Nissan North America Inc., has been president of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers since April 2000.

The members of PAX Community Church of northern Virginia have been volunteering their skills for more than a decade. Says MacCarthy: "I do it because there is a need (and) to give...
