It was four years ago when retired Prospect girls athletic director Jean Walker scheduled the girls basketball team into the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.

After his Knights had dominated at the McHenry tournament in 1998 and 1999, coach Mike Nocella admitted that joining the state's premier Christmas tourney in 2000 was "kind of a big jump, but I think we can compete."

Nocella was right on target. His Knights have made their presence felt each year in Carpentersville. Tuesday, they completed their finest run record-wise in the prestigious 16-team girls basketball tourney.

With a 52-34 victory over Evanston, the Knights (11-2) not only captured fifth place, but finished 3-1, their best record in four years.

Going into the game, Evanston coach Steve Wool said his primary concern was stopping Prospect's all-tourney selections Gabrielle Cottrell and Abbie Many.

That turned out to be easier said than done.

The senior duo scored 32 points. Cottrell had 21 points (four 3- pointers in 6 attempts) and Many had 11 points.
