- United Airlines announces it will cut 1,700 jobs Jan. 19.

- Metra proposes Northwest, West train link that would connect O'Hare up the Northwest Tollway to HE/Barrington; then along the EJ&E to Joliet. It wins support of local mayors.

- Elderly Mount Prospect couple dies in murder-suicide. Ray, 76, and Marilyn Agger, 82, died inside and near their car at Wa-Pella Avenue and Council Trail. A note indicated their failing health drove them to commit suicide.

- Harper College radio station goes on air; previously it couldn't be heard beyond the cafeteria.

- District 59 votes to retain full-day kindergarten.

- Mount Prospect awards Shining Stars to 13 people, businesses and organizations: Dean Lee; Picket Fence Realty; Mount Prospect Garden Club; Joyce Wille; Donna Quarino; Kimberly Unger; Jan Scott; Jim Caulfield; Mount Prospect Community Band; Nanci Koschman; Jim Carver; Alice Mickelson; Dana Di Caro.
