Metro Detroit already has a lineup of major sporting events coming to town during the next several years, but its potential to attract more depends on rigorous pregame training.

The Ryder Cup, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Super Bowl XL and the NCAA Final Four men's basketball tournament each will provide opportunities to showcase the region on a national scale. Including all major events, the combined economic impact of these sort of big-ticket sports draws will exceed $700 million by 2009.

If the events are successful, it will help ensure that Detroit is "in the rotation'' to secure them again, said Dave Beachnau, executive director of the Detroit Metro Sports Commission.
