Optimism reigned last Thursday at an economic development seminar led by Carnegie Mellon University Professor Richard Florida, despite metro Detroit's manufacturing job losses and the national stigma of crime that still sometimes sticks to Detroit.

"You can feel it. You can feel that there is something that is going to happen,'' said Philip Mason, owner of Design Council L.L.C., a Detroit-based Web and multimedia design company.

By "it,'' Mason was referring to the hope that Detroit is on the cusp of re-emergence as a vibrant entertainment district and revitalized economy.
