Cingular Wireless L.L.C. is gaining a strong business-customer base in its acquisition of AT&T Wireless, and that could ratchet up competition for the business wireless dollar in Southeast Michigan.

Cingular plans to capitalize on the strengths it gains in its $41 billion acquisition of AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE). The acquisition, which could be final in nine months to a year, would expand Cingular's customer and geographic reach and create the nation's largest wireless carrier, with coverage in 97 of the nation's top 100 markets.

The deal combines Cingular's consumer footprint with AT&T's business-services forte throughout the country and in Southeast Michigan, where the auto industry and commuting population make for an attractive and important market.
