This BAR publication of Michael Pickering's PhD is a study of settlement and subsistence in an inland region of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Its focus is on issues of scale, territoriality and the relative contribution of social and environmental factors to regional organisation. Though relevant to both archaeology and anthropology, the research is in essence an ethnographic study which aims to reconstruct settlement patterns from oral testimony.
Chapter 1 provides a background to the study, the author's previous work in the region as an anthropologist for an Aboriginal land council and introduces the Garawa people with whom the research was carried out. Chapter 2 discusses theoretical issues underlying the ecological study of hunter-gatherers and weighs up alternative approaches.
