State sees record harvests combined with greatly improved prices: ''it is one of those years you always hope for, but don''t get very often,'' says ag expert.

Instead of the doom and gloom that has been the usual fare in agriculture in the past couple of years, all the stars and planets have aligned this year to combine a record-breaking harvest in key commodities with some of the best prices seen in a long time.

"It's been a fantastic year for agriculture in the state," said Mississippi agriculture commissioner Dr. Lester Spell. "It really, really has. Last year we had tremendous potential. Then storms moved in back-to-back and diminished harvest quantity and quality. This year has been a record year for production and prices are good."

The state's top two crops, cotton and soybeans, have seen record yields combined with prices considerably higher than a year ago. The state's other top commodity, timber, is also doing better.

"The timber market is stronger than it has been in the past few years," Spell said....
