HATTIESBURG -- Down with the old and up with the new has long been common in construction. Usually, renovation has not been a popular word. As a result, new buildings, malls and shopping centers have sprung up constantly both in and adjacent to cities and older buildings have been tom down or left empty to deteriorate.
Hattiesburg, though, is seeing the reverse, with a surge of renovation the past two years so that last year, more was spent on the renovation of existing buildings than on the construction of new ones.
At this time last year, Hattiesburg saw $31.6 million on renovation and $15.7 million on new construction, according to figures from the City of Hattiesburg. Renovation was lagging the first half of this year but, since June, there has been an increase, with several projects underway, just completed or about to begin, and Hattiesburg officials say it's now possible that, by the year's end, the...
