Reversal of Policy For Steel Tariffs?

President George W. Bush is effecting a U-turn for his 20-month-old tariffs on imported steel. Sources told the business shortly before going to press that although Bush had not made a final decision, he was "reviewing" the tariff regime. Even before a formal announcement the White House was in spin mode, arguing that the tariffs could be repealed because they had accomplished administration goals of allowing the steel industry time to regroup and recover.

Administration sources confirmed the White House was keen to avoid threatened trade retaliation from the European Union (EU), Japan and other countries over the tariffs, which the World Trade Organization recently ruled are illegal.
