"French Tom" raises B & G''s company profile.

Barton & Guestier, the Bordeaux-based wine firm, was established in 1725. That's 278 years ago. You'd think they would be pretty set in their ways by now, but the firm is indeed learning some new tricks under the leadership of Nicolas Gailly, who was named managing director of the company two years ago.

Most people in the trade probably think of B & G as a negociant, but that's no longer true, Gailly said in a telephone interview with Wines & Vines. "We now have a team of 15 winemakers in different regions of France. We work with 150 wine-growers in various regions, a much smaller and more select group than previously," he said. Gailly said the growers were really partners, with the wine made under the direction of B & G's winemaking team at facilities near where the grapes are grown.
