Twenty-five years ago, as a keen, youngish business administration student, I had occasion to write a cluster analysis package, so I was interested to review this book to see how the field has progressed in the intervening years. At that time, I had been fortunate to have received tuition from old-school specialist and professional statisticians. Anyone studying statistics was regaled with such folklore stories as the noted observation that, in the early days of North America, the figures for crime rose in step with the number of churches. It would be debated whether this implied that church attendance drove one to criminality, or whether criminals sought to assuage their consciences by endowing new churches.
