SO IS that it for quantitative easing? That is the question the City is asking after the Bank of England last week chose to extend its printing money programme by "just" [pounds sterling]25 billion to [pounds sterling]200 billion over the next three months.

Many believe the answer is "yes" and that once the Bank has spent the remaining cash it will switch off the printing presses for good.

There is logic behind this view. The [pounds sterling]6 billion-plus the Bank pumped into the economy every week over the spring and summer fell to about [pounds sterling]4 billion a week over the autumn and has now been cut to some [pounds sterling]2 billion a week for the winter.
