It was a banner day for District 300 girls basketball teams Saturday at the 16th annual Geneva Thanksgiving Tournament.

And the Illinois High School Association's girls basketball record book will have some new additions to it as well.

Jacobs surprised a good-sized crowd with a 50-40 win over 16th- ranked Joliet Catholic in the championship game while Hampshire, the Golden Eagles' D300 sister school, stopped Geneva 62-56 in a third-place game full of free throw records.

For Jacobs, the tournament title is the first for the program in anyone's recollection and has first-year coach Ed Haugens fired up.

"I'm so excited and I'm so happy for the girls," said Haugens. "They played so hard, they deserve it. They work so hard in practice, now they're starting to see the fruits of their labor."

The Golden Eagles got a stellar performance from 5-foot-9 senior Natalie Pucci, who scored a team-high 17 points and is now just 20 points from tying Heather Rayka for the all-time school scoring record. Pucci was named MVP of...
