Folklore has it that cops have a natural affinity for doughnuts. It is, of course, blatant stereotyping, but, as with many urban legends, it undoubtedly has an element of truth. It also begs the question: "What's not to like?"

When it comes to Mr. D's Restaurant & Bakery of La Crosse, Wis., an eatery that is famous for doughnuts, this piece of doggerel also extends to apple fritters and to the Secret Service.

During a presidential trip last summer to this Upper Mississippi Valley campus town of around 50,000, George W. Bush's Secret Service cronies discovered this bakery and its ambrosial apple fritters and passed on the word to their boss. The result was a large order of fritters for Air Force One.

"They paid by credit card," says owner Art Lotz, adding, tongue in cheek: "What's more, the charge was approved."

Those same apple fritters came to the attention of David Letterman after the late-night talk show host...
