The holiday season officially began in Prospect Heights with Saturday's lighting of the tree in front of city hall. In Schaumburg, residents carried on their German tradition of holding an open-air Christkindlesmarkt.

But at a tree lighting ceremony in Barrington, it nearly was the case of the missing Santa.

Several hundred holiday revelers, dressed in warm winter jackets and brightly colored hats, gathered a few minutes before the scheduled lighting of the village's Christmas tree at Main and Cook streets.
