Immigration policies in need of change

Thank you for writing the series about our Mexican neighbors. I think it is very important to tell their story.

Many Caucasian Americans are ignorant of the plight of the Mexican people. When I was in high school, I came to realize this plight when I and a group took a trip of awareness to Cuernavaca, Mexico.

This was not a vacation by any means. We stayed in a convent, where we took classes on the political situation, religion, economics and education in Mexico.

We also spent a lot of time visiting the people of Mexico.

We visited an elderly woman who lived alone in a shack without water, electricity, etc. and also visited a shantytown where children and dogs roamed around freely.

The shantytown had just recently received electricity, but it had no running water in the homes.

They were simply one- or two-room homes made out of cement with tin roofs. Many did not even have doors.

Three years previous to our visit, they had had an open sewer ditch running through the area. This experience was an eye-opener for me.

It was amazing to me that a wealthy country like the United States could be right next to such an impoverished population. I really feel the United States should change the current immigration policies for Mexicans.
