What do you want to know and when do you want to know it?
We information professionals always seem to reach for knowledge of what the future holds, but--to be honest--there are probably lots of situations when we might not want to know. The plot of a science-fiction movie out this year had star Nicholas Cage convinced that he knew exactly what was going to happen--and it wasn't pretty. What would you do if you knew people were about to die in some accident? (By the way, I do not recommend the movie. Good story concept, poor assembly.)
How about knowing something about technology? These are not accidents waiting to happen. They are resources under implementation for us to see, touch, feel, knowing that they will impact our lives in the coming years. Here are five technologies that will enhance the way that technology supports what we do in both our business and personal lives. Keep in mind that you have to choose whether you want to embrace these technologies now, soon, or later.
From Thought to Digital
One of the best courses I took in high school was personal typing. It was the late 1950s and this course saved my butt throughout the rest of high school and into college, letting me type my papers without drowning in "white-out." Knowing where the keys are and having all 10 fingers in play has served me well. Thank god the QWERTY keyboard layout has not changed since then.
Finding alternatives to typing is a goal of many--and it is happening. Touch screens have been advancing for a few years now. They have been implemented in many ways. Restaurants use them to handle ordering and billing. Bank ATMs rely on them. Airlines have implemented self-check-in at kiosk touch screens. The medical profession is another key user of these screens.
