SPRINGFIELD - A plan to hook up Douglas Garden area neighbors to the city's sewer system drew praise and criticism at a City Council meeting Monday night as councilors voted unanimously to begin the process.

Prior to the meeting, some residents eager to make the switch from private septic system to city sewer sent a signed petition to the city to request that houses on Cherokee Drive from 34th Place to 38th Place be hooked up to the city's wastewater system. The petition was spearheaded by Robert and Lisa Thomas, homeowners at 38th Place and Cherokee Drive, after their septic tank failed in October 2008.
