The 21-year-old Alliance Healthcare Foundation has changed the way it offers financial support to organizations that primarily serve uninsured and indigent populations.

It recently streamlined its grant making process. Instead of accepting rolling applications for grants, San Diego-based Alliance will hold two calls for proposals a year, in August and February.

This spring, Alliance will also launch an "Innovation Competition" to award $1 million to a nonprofit with the most innovative health care program, says CEO Karma Bass.

"Almost like the X-Prize, we want agencies to give us their biggest, boldest, most audacious concept," Bass said. "Show us a concept with tremendous return on investment for the community."

Bass, who has been CEO for 15 months, has been tasked with implementing this new strategic vision for Alliance that also includes prioritizing technology-related programs.
