Quan ho is a traditional "call and response" or antiphonal mode of singing, which first originated in present day Bac Ninh province.

The story goes that there were two villages, Lung Giang village (now Liem village) and Tam Son village (Tu Son), which would come together for regular singing parties. A small group of elders would be invited with a large group of younger singers by the other village. Everyone would convene at one of the village's communal house.

The evening was a sort of friendly competition that could go on all night. One group of young men would sing and the girls from the other village would sing back. At the heart of traditional quan ho remains that sense of "ket cha" (friendship) between villages.

This style singing slowly permeated the local culture....
