How is healing defined? It is a word that often means different things to different people. I believe that healing is more than simply curing. In a study to determine a definition of healing, Egnew (2005) found that healing was associated with the themes of wholeness, narrative, and spirituality. According to Egnew (2005), "healing is an intensely personal, subjective experience involving a reconciliation of the meaning an individual ascribes to distressing events with his or her perception of wholeness as a person" (p. 255).

At the center of healing is the presence of the nurse. Florence Nightingale (1859) defined nursing as the care that puts the patient in the best possible condition for nature to act, and she further described...
