Day 1 Dance department director Greg Halloran introduces me to thirty students sprawled on the dance studio floor, some in ballet clothing, others in baggy pants. I see some familiar faces and eager expressions. This is my second visit to the University of Idaho for a weeklong residency that will culminate in a public performance.

Before starting the class I hear, "Do we please get to sing again?" Last year I had the dancers vocalize the highs and lows of movements, and many had felt shy to do that. I'm thrilled this group seems ready to jump right in.

In my teaching I draw from eclectic training at Juilliard and forming stints with The Limon Dance Company and Alwin Nikolais. I work to elongate muscles and line, as well as to instill a sense of musicality and wit. I ask the dancers to plie and breathe out through imaginary nostrils in their kneecaps.
