Banner Service, Carol Stream, Ill., and Boston Centerless, Woburn, Mass., are among the larger competitors in a market filled with small grinding shops. They use centerless grinding equipment to grind and polish bar to the extremely tight tolerances required by today's new generation of computer controlled machine tool equipment.

Centerless grinders can produce bar sized to a tolerance of plus or minus 0.0001 inch--far more precise than the mill standard of 0.002 inch. They can also produce surface finishes under 8 microinches.
