MANY years ago, when our children were young -- about nine, six and three -- my husband and I took them for a Sunday drive through the Shropshire villages. It was sunny and warm. We parked by a church and slowly walked around a village. Passing a cottage, we saw an elderly man sitting by a table with several chairs laid out with tea, cakes and sandwiches, which were covered up.

Suddenly, he rose and called to us: 'Come in! Come in!

Come and have some tea, we are pleased to see you.' We looked at each other and the children said: 'Can we go in?' The man called again. 'Come along, I'll get some juice for the children'. So in we went, we sat down and he uncovered the food. The children tucked in.
