Any good grower will tell you that an important aspect of growing mushrooms is making careful crop observations during the daily walk-through of the houses. Observing spawn growth, pin set and mushroom quality are very important, but it's also important to monitor your houses for pests and disease from the onset of spawn run. Chemicals are available to reduce the numbers of many pathogens and pests once they are present in a crop. It's often too late to make a major impact to that room once certain problems arise.

More important than just getting a room under control is interpreting what you are seeing and making the necessary corrections to get the farm back under control, thereby minimizing impacts to other rooms and future crops. One organism that can be used as an indicator of your farm operation is the presence of mites on the beds.
