Article Excerpt In March 2009, King Abdullah appointed a new Shura Council, an advisory body of 150 members chosen by the monarch for a term. The Shura advises the king and the government on issues of importance to the kingdom. As such, and with King Abdullah's encouragement, the Shura Council has become a key player in the government's decision-making system.
On March 24, the 150 members of the new Shura, several members of the royal family, ministers and diplomats heard the king's speech opening the new body. At the outset, King Abdullah thanked Shaikh Saleh bin-Humaid, the former Shura chief, for his services, and welcomed Shaikh Abdullah Aal-al-Shaikh as the new Shura chairman.
Shaikh Abdullah and other members of the Aal al-Shaikh family (Aal al-Shaikh means the House of the Holy Shaikh) are direct descendants of Shaikh Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab who founded Wahhabism in Arabia more than 150 years ago. Wahhabism was a Sunni corrective movement going back to the purity and originality of Sunni Islam, known in Arabic as salaf, hence Wahhabism is a salafi movement....
