King Fahd ibn Abdul-Aziz died on Aug. 1, 2005, and was succeeded on the same day by his half-brother Abdullah who appointed Fahd's full-brother Sultan as crown prince. As King Abdullah has retained control over the National Guard, Crown Prince Sultan has kept control over the regular armed forces in his capacity as minister of defence and became deputy PM - with the king having the post of PM. But Prince Sultan now is seriously ill with cancer and is no longer active in the affairs of state, staying in Morocco. On March 27, 2009, King Abdullah made Sultan's younger full-brother, Prince Nayef, 2nd deputy PM and the latter retained his long-standing position as minister of interior - thus becoming the second most powerful man in the kingdom next to the monarch.
